ASEAN Legal Alliance LLP (“ALA”) gets foothold into Shanghai Free Trade Zone, China

ALA entered into an MOU with the Shanghai Arbitration Court of International Shipping (“SACIS”) to form the ASEAN Legal Centre, Shanghai in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The signing of the MOU on 7 March 2017 in Shanghai was officiated by Deputy Director of Shanghai Transport Commission, Mr Zhang Lin and Deputy Director of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone Mr Chen Xi in the presence of senior members of the Shanghai shipping and maritime industry.

The ASEAN Legal Centre, Shanghai will be headed by Mdm Huo Zhengmei who is also the President of the SACIS and Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Arbitration Commission. “The formation of the ASEAN Legal Centre in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone is to facilitate trade and commerce between China and ASEAN. The legal systems in ASEAN are diverse and complex and with the Centre, we hope to be able to assist investors from China going into ASEAN with effective and practical legal support” said Mdm Huo.

Representing ALA at the signing ceremony was Mr Aloysius Wee, Chairman of the ALA, Prof Steve Ngo, Chairman of the Arbitration and ADR Practice Group of the ALA and Dato Seri Matthew Yeoh, Chairman of the Private Client and Real Estate Practice Group of the ALA. “It is a real honour for the ALA to be part of the ASEAN Legal Centre, Shanghai. We will provide the legal expertise for the Centre through our members who are in the ten member ASEAN countries” said Mr Wee.

The Centre will be housed in the Shanghai Maritime Centre in Pudong. Shanghai and will have meeting and conference facilities to host events and meetings. Prof Steve Ngo representing ALA in this collaboration will be the Centre’s Deputy Director. The Centre will also operate as ALA’s China secretariat supporting the current secretariat in Singapore.
